A video demonstrating the correct pronunciation of Kamala Harris’ name has resurfaced, initially shared on Harris’ official account on May 24, 2016.
The video features children mispronouncing her name followed by the correct pronunciation. Towards the end, the children express support for Harris on education and childcare. Harris herself concludes saying, “I am Kamala Harris and I approve this message.”
Recently, the video has gained traction on X platform, with over 143,300 views since user @danbarker posted it on July 22. Additionally, BBC presenter Tina Daheley shared a video on the same day explaining the pronunciation based on Harris’ memoir instructions.
Daheley’s video, viewed over 3 million times, emphasizes the pronunciation resembling “comma” and “la.” Nevertheless, some users pointed out that the pronunciation reference to “comma” may vary based on accents, particularly in American versus British English. They directed viewers to the 2016 video for the accurate pronunciation.
Mispronunciations of the vice president’s name by public figures, such as during the recent Republican National Convention, have been reported. In a separate incident, FOX News host Tucker Carlson was corrected live on air in 2020 for mispronouncing Harris’ name, sparking a debate on the matter.
Following Joe Biden’s announcement of stepping down from the 2024 presidential race, he endorsed Vice President Harris as the Democratic nominee. A recent national poll of 1,309 adults conducted by Marist for NPR and PBS News indicated Harris leading the race with 50% support compared to Trump’s 49%.
Furthermore, another video reemerging on X feeds from Harris’ official account is her 2020 campaign video “The Antidote to Trump,” which criticizes Trump as a “world leader in temper tantrums” and champions Harris as the unifier.
