A recent report by the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense (MOD) reveals that Russia has deployed barges to protect the Kerch Bridge in Crimea.
The MOD’s analysis of images shows eight defensive barges positioned on the southern side of the bridge, indicating heightened security measures.
The Kerch Bridge, a significant link between Russia and Crimea, suffered damage from an IED explosion in 2022 and partial closure due to explosions in 2023.
According to the MOD, the barges were strategically placed at the bridge between May 10 and 22 to defend the shipping channel and deter potential threats from Ukrainian Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV).
Storms have damaged previous barriers in the region, diminishing their effectiveness and necessitating new defensive strategies.
Russia’s move to fortify the Kerch Bridge reflects its commitment to ensuring strategic connections to Crimea and its allies, intensifying the need for comprehensive security measures.
With ongoing challenges from Ukrainian military forces, Russian officials must maintain a high level of vigilance to safeguard critical infrastructure like the Crimean Bridge.
Furthermore, the MOD reports that Russia deployed barges on March 31 to protect its Black Sea Fleet Base in Novorossiysk following attacks on the base in Sevastopol.
