Prime Foods Processing is recalling its Egg Custard Steamed Buns across 27 states due to a potential health risk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that these buns could contain undeclared sesame, a known allergen that poses a serious risk for individuals with sensitivities.
The specific products under recall are the Steam Buns with Egg Custard Added (Item #PD4180) and Steam Buns with Egg Custard and Coconut Added (Item #PD4190). They have lot codes #24149 and #24150 with an expiration date of October 2025.
These products were distributed to grocery stores between May 30, 2024, and June 28, 2024 in states such as Arizona, California, Colorado, and more. The buns come in bright yellow packaging, with the lot codes located on the bottom of the left side panel.
The recall was triggered after an internal audit revealed that some sesame-flavored buns were mistakenly packaged as egg custard buns. Thankfully, there have been no reported illnesses or complaints, as of the announcement on August 9, 2024. The company has rectified the issue in its packaging process.
If you have purchased these steamed buns, it’s advised to return them to the store for a full refund, and refrain from consuming them, even if they’ve been opened.
Possible allergic reactions include symptoms like rashes, hives, itching, vomiting, diarrhea, throat swelling, and in serious cases, anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening.
Sesame is identified as one of the FDA’s nine major allergens, which also include wheat, milk, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, egg, crustaceans, and fish. Food manufacturers must clearly label these allergens on their products to inform consumers.
