In a heartwarming show of support, a single mom from Ogden, Utah, named Erika Diarte-Carr, has raised over $1 million through a crowdfunding campaign aimed at securing her children’s future. Her story began on June 26 when she initially set a goal of $5,000 for funeral expenses after being diagnosed with stage 4 Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (SCLC) two years ago.
The 30-year-old mother, who has a 5-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son, shared that she sought medical attention for a sore shoulder, only to be given a life-altering diagnosis. Feeling too unwell to work this summer, she reached out for financial help as her health declined.
In a recent update to her GoFundMe page, she revealed that her oncologist had given her just three months to live, which prompted her to consider funeral plans for her children, Jeremiah and Aaliyah. “I need to make sure my kids will be okay after I am gone,” she expressed.
Erika’s story deeply resonated with many, leading to a tremendous outpouring of donations—over 35,000 people contributed to the cause. With the funds, she plans to establish a trust for her children so they will be secure as they grow up. “My children are my fight and what keep me going,” she said.
Despite her struggle, Erika found it challenging to seek help. “I have always been independent and used to managing everything on my own,” she admitted. For the past two years, she faced a devastating cancer diagnosis, battling it mostly in silence.
After initially juggling work and medical treatments, her condition worsened, making it impossible for her to maintain her job. In her candid updates, she expressed vulnerability about her situation and thanked her support system for being there during this difficult period.
Now, with financial worries alleviated, Erika aims to focus her remaining time on her family. “If you could please donate or share, anything would be appreciated,” she stated, underscoring the importance of community support in her journey.
Donors have shared heartfelt messages, recognizing her strength and expressing their best wishes for the family. “Your love and dedication to them will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on their lives,” one supporter noted, highlighting the profound bond Erika shares with her children.
