Bengals Defender Shares Uncertainty About Ja’Marr Chase’s Week 1 Availability: ‘Who Knows?’

This NFL offseason has seen quite a bit of drama with star wide receivers and their contracts. The Dallas Cowboys have just wrapped up their issue with CeeDee Lamb, but others are still in negotiations.

San Francisco 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk and Cincinnati Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase are both looking for new deals. Although Chase has been present at training camp, he’s been mostly sidelined due to ongoing contract talks.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor recently expressed confidence that Chase will be ready for the season opener against the New England Patriots. However, following his comments, Chase missed practice, prompting Taylor to backtrack on his earlier assurance.

Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton commented on the possibility of a Chase-less Week 1, saying, “Nah, not at all. Even if he isn’t, we’re ready for it. The guys stepping up behind him have been getting valuable reps.”

Chase not being available could significantly impact the Bengals’ season start. While the team has another standout receiver in Tee Higgins, having both on the field is crucial for maximizing the offense’s potential.

This year’s training camp marks the first where star quarterback Joe Burrow has fully participated, enhancing the team’s dynamics. Unfortunately, Chase’s contract situation is a monkey wrench just as the season draws near.

Chase believes he deserves a lucrative contract extension. However, the Bengals have thus far been firm about their terms. In July, owner Mike Brown indicated it wasn’t the right time to negotiate, which raised eyebrows.

“It’s not so likely that this is the good time to negotiate,” Brown noted in July, via Ben Baby of ESPN. “The offseason is a better time for that. I won’t rule anything out, but the die has probably been cast.”

As the season opener approaches, it’s unclear if Chase and the Bengals will finalize a deal. If they don’t, it’s possible Chase might opt to sit out, which would seriously hinder the Bengals week-to-week, considering his impact as one of the league’s top receivers.
