However, Richardson’s recent performance during a joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals raised some eyebrows. His struggles were evident as he spent more time scrambling than actually throwing the ball, leading to some pointed remarks from Bengals defenders.

Bengals defensive tackle B.J. Hill quipped, “Throw the ball, bro!” while cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt added, “Is that all he does is run?” in reference to Richardson’s evasive tactics. Safety Geno Stone pointed out a flaw in Richardson’s game, noting, “He doesn’t see his receivers” and accused him of merely throwing to spots rather than looking downfield.

During the practice, Richardson completed 10 of 20 passes, including a touchdown throw to rookie wide receiver Adonai Mitchell. However, a miscommunication with Michael Pittman Jr. led to an interception by linebacker Logan Wilson, showcasing the struggles in their chemistry.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen remains optimistic about Richardson’s development and is confident that game-like situations will only benefit him. In the preseason finale against the same Bengals team, he plans to have the starting offense, including Richardson, on the field in the second quarter.

“It’ll be really good for (Richardson),” Steichen expressed. “It’s important to prepare smartly for the long season ahead, and we’re looking forward to seeing our guys in action.”

Looking back, Richardson’s rookie season saw him play just four games, finishing with a 2-2 record, 50 completions for 577 yards, and a passer rating of 87.3.
