Bo Nix: Broncos Quarterback Achieves 1967 Milestone

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has officially announced that rookie quarterback Bo Nix will serve as one of the team’s six captains for the 2024 season. Joining him in this leadership role are wide receiver Courtland Sutton, offensive guard Quinn Meinerz, cornerback Pat Surtain II, inside linebacker Alex Singleton, and kicker Will Lutz.

These captains were chosen by their fellow Broncos teammates, with Sutton being the only one returning from last season.

With this honor, Nix becomes the first rookie captain for the Broncos since Floyd Little, who was drafted in 1967. Little, affectionately known as “the Franchise,” made a significant impact on the team’s legacy, earning five Pro Bowl selections and a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Nix was also confirmed as the starting quarterback prior to the Broncos’ third preseason game, having outperformed competitors Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson. The No. 12 overall pick from Oregon showcased his talent with impressive stats in his first two preseason outings.

His first preseason match featured 15 completions on 21 attempts for 125 yards and a touchdown, while in his second game, he was 8-for-9 for 80 yards and another touchdown.

With his debut as a starting quarterback in Week 1, Nix will mirror the legacy of franchise legend John Elway. “It will be a special moment,” Nix shared on August 21, emphasizing his desire to contribute to the team.

Entering the NFL after a standout college career, Nix played five seasons, including three with Auburn and two with Oregon. He’s made history as the NCAA player with the most starts—61, a record that showcases his extensive experience.

During his senior year, he solidified his first-round pick status with an outstanding completion rate of 77.4%, passing for 4,508 yards, 45 touchdowns, and only three interceptions, leading Oregon to a 12-2 finish.

Among the impressive rookie quarterback class of 2024, Nix and the Chicago Bears’ Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick, are the only two players to be selected as team captains.
