Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the San Francisco 49ers is starting to clear up, and it seems he won’t be joining the New England Patriots.
Trade speculations around Aiyuk have been rife recently, particularly after a long contract holdout. While the Patriots, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers were initially mentioned as potential suitors, they’ve now dropped back to just two contenders.
New England had been vying for Aiyuk’s services for some time, reportedly willing to offer him a salary that would rank among the top five in the league for wide receivers.
The Niners permitted Aiyuk to explore his options, yet they remain interested in keeping him on their roster.
In a recent press conference, head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that Aiyuk’s situation has been stagnant for a while, referring to it as a “hold-in.” Aiyuk is present at camp but isn’t participating in drills.
The 26-year-old has made a significant impact with 153 catches, 2,357 yards, and 15 touchdowns over the last two seasons. In 2024, he reached second-team AP All-Pro status, tallying 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. Despite his achievements, he’s set to earn $14.124 million this season, which is considered low compared to the top wideouts who hit around $20 million annually.
Recent reports suggest that a trade framework might have existed between the 49ers, Browns, and Patriots. With the Patriots out of the race, the Browns could be in the lead for Aiyuk’s services unless a contract extension occurs in San Francisco.
Drafted 25th overall in 2020, Aiyuk has logged 3,931 receiving yards over 62 games, averaging 63.4 yards per match, and he’s also contributed during the postseason with 24 receptions for 393 yards.
“Losing a player like Brandon is tough; he’s a fantastic talent,” Shanahan remarked, per ESPN. “We must evaluate the situation fully, but we’re hoping for a resolution that benefits everyone involved.”
