Browns Let Go of Super Bowl Champ Who Now Faces Injury Setback

The Cleveland Browns are well-known for having a strong offensive line, achieving a commendable No. 2 ranking by Pro Football Focus for the 2023 season. The team is always on the lookout for ways to bolster this crucial position to keep their quarterback well-protected.

According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, the Browns have let go of Allen after he was recently put on IR. Initially, he was expected to serve as backup and a rotational player behind Ethan Pocic, but his injury changed that trajectory.

Allen’s NFL journey began when he was drafted in 2018, marking a rocky start as he primarily played a backup role in his rookie year. By 2019, he was named the starting center, but his season was cut short due to an MCL injury. The following season, he became the first NFL player to test positive for COVID-19, which sidelined him for the whole year. However, he bounced back well in 2021 by starting 16 of 17 games and played a significant role in the Rams’ Super Bowl run, even earning a Pro Bowl alternate nod.

After the Rams’ Super Bowl victory, Allen signed a two-year contract extension worth $14 million but faced another setback with injuries in 2022, limiting him to five games. His troubles continued into the 2023 season, where he was eclipsed by Coleman Shelton for the starting position and only saw action in a few games before landing on IR again.

While there was hope for Allen’s return in 2024, his recent release puts into question his future in the league. Once he comes off IR, he may find it challenging to secure a new contract given his injury history, with 2021 being his only fully healthy season thus far.
