As the 2023 NFL season kicks off, the Kansas City Chiefs have made an exciting addition to their roster by re-signing veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. The news, first reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero, sets the stage for a promising reunion.
Smith-Schuster was a key player for the Chiefs during their 2022 Super Bowl run, where he caught seven passes for 53 yards in the championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Over the entire season, he tallied 78 receptions for 933 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing a strong rapport with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
After a one-year stint with the Chiefs, Smith-Schuster signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the New England Patriots. Unfortunately, his time in New England was tumultuous, resulting in just 29 catches for 260 yards and one touchdown across 11 games before his release this offseason.
During his peak, Smith-Schuster made a name for himself, even earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2018. However, his performance has waned in recent seasons. Now back with Kansas City, he appears poised to revive his game, especially as the team awaits Marquise Brown’s recovery from a sternoclavicular injury that could sideline him for 4-6 weeks.
The Chiefs’ wide receiver corps, featuring rookie Xavier Worthy and Skyy Moore alongside Smith-Schuster, remains solid. With Travis Kelce leading the tight end position, Kansas City boasts one of the most formidable offenses in the league.
As the Chiefs aim for a historic third consecutive Super Bowl victory, re-signing Smith-Schuster only enhances their chances of making that dream a reality.
