Daniel Jones’ Preseason Update: What Giants Fans Need to Know

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is set to make his return to the field this preseason. Coach Brian Daboll mentioned on Sunday that fans can expect to see Jones in action against the Houston Texans next weekend.

Jones, who is fully cleared to play after recovering from a torn ACL, will be stepping back into the spotlight for the first time since his surgery eight months ago.

While Jones was sidelined, the Giants utilized Drew Lock and Tommy Devito as their quarterback duo. However, Lock left a recent game with a hip injury, leaving Devito as the sole quarterback on the roster.

Daboll confirmed that the team does not plan on bringing in another quarterback for the time being. In the meantime, tight end Tyree Jackson has been named the emergency quarterback.

This season is crucial for Jones as he aims to solidify his place as the Giants’ starting quarterback. General manager Joe Schoen hinted at this pressure during an interview highlighted in the first episode of Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants.

“This is the year for Daniel. The plan was to give him a couple of years. Is he our guy for the next 10 years, or do we need to explore other options?”

After signing a hefty extension last offseason despite having only one standout season, 2024 could pivot the trajectory of Jones’ career.

Prior to his injury last season, Jones recorded 909 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions in just six games. He will be eager to bounce back and deliver a stronger full season this time around.

The addition of standout wide receiver Malik Nabers from LSU may provide the offensive boost Jones needs. With Nabers joining the ranks alongside Darius Slayton and Wan’Dale Robinson, Jones could lead a more effective offense.

The organization has placed its trust in Jones for now, but with playoff expectations high, he needs to deliver. Missing the postseason could jeopardize his future with the team.
