Falcons’ New QB Michael Penix Shines in Debut Amid Draft Debate

One of the biggest talking points from the 2024 NFL Draft was the Atlanta Falcons’ decision to snag quarterback Michael Penix Jr. at pick No. 8. This choice raised eyebrows, especially since the team had recently signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to a hefty contract.

Despite the social media backlash, the Falcons remained confident in their decision. Penix made his much-anticipated NFL debut on Friday night against the Miami Dolphins, performing quite well amidst the scrutiny.

He completed 9 of 16 passes for 104 yards, though Atlanta ultimately lost the game. Nonetheless, it was a promising start for the rookie quarterback.

Reflecting on his debut, Penix shared he felt no nerves, just excitement to play with his teammates. “It felt good to go out there and compete with my brothers,” Penix said. “Just having fun out there and playing the game I’ve been playing since I was 5 years old. So, no nerves, no jitters, just ready to go.”

While it might take some time before Penix sees consistent playing time, every preseason opportunity is a chance to grow. Cousins will likely remain the starter, providing Penix with an excellent opportunity to learn and develop his skills.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris praised Penix’s performance, noting that while he wanted to adjust a few throws, he successfully navigated through progressions and executed plays. “Pretty much, a really good night for him and I was really pleased with what he was able to do,” Morris commented.

Penix still has a way to go before he earns the Falcons’ full confidence, but this debut was a step in the right direction. With a day-by-day mindset, he appears to be off to an encouraging start.
