The New York Jets made a surprising move by firing head coach Robert Saleh after a rocky 2-3 start to the season. Following consecutive losses, including a 23-17 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings in London, the Jets are set to face the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football under new leadership.

According to reports, Saleh arrived at the Jets’ facility unaware of his fate and was “blindsided” by the decision made by owner Woody Johnson, as highlighted by Jay Glazer.
“This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets,” Johnson stated. “While this was not an easy choice, we are not achieving the expectations we set, and I believe now is the right time for a change.”
The Jets have since promoted defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Johnson expressed confidence in Ulbrich’s ability to motivate the team and maximize their potential.
Saleh, who joined the Jets in 2021 after a successful stint as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, ended his tenure with a 20-36 record. One of the major hurdles during his time has been the team’s ongoing quarterback dilemma — a trend that dates back to Joe Namath’s era.

The Jets drafted Zach Wilson as the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but a lack of performance meant he never solidified his role as the franchise quarterback. Hopes soared in 2023 with the acquisition of Aaron Rodgers, but those were dashed when Rodgers suffered an Achilles injury in Week 1.
Even with a struggling 2-3 record, the Jets opted for a coaching change in pursuit of revitalizing their season and making the most of the Rodgers situation.
