Head Coaches Dismissed Mid-Season

Matt Rhule – Carolina Panthers

The latest example of a mid-season firing is Matt Rhule, who was brought on by the Carolina Panthers in 2020 following a successful run in college football. Despite high hopes, Rhule struggled to meet expectations, finishing his tenure with a record of 11-27 over two seasons before being let go after starting 1-4 in 2022. He has since returned to college coaching, leading the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Urban Meyer – Jacksonville Jaguars

Another high-profile firing was Urban Meyer, who led the Jaguars during the tumultuous 2021 season. Meyer’s time was marred by controversy, including allegations of misconduct and reports of player mistreatment. After a dismal 2-11 record and mounting issues, Meyer was relieved of his duties.

Mike McCarthy – Green Bay Packers

Mike McCarthy, a long-standing figure in the NFL, was fired by the Green Bay Packers in 2018 after a decline in performance. His impressive run included a Super Bowl win in 2010, yet after a disappointing 4-7-1 start that season, the Packers decided it was time for a change. McCarthy now heads the Dallas Cowboys, still seeking championship success.
