The 2024 NFL Draft made history with six quarterbacks selected within the top 12 picks, an event reminiscent of the legendary 1983 Draft. Unlike in the past, this year’s class saw all these signal-callers chosen in the first 12 picks, igniting excitement among fanbases eager for a promising future.
During Week 1 of the preseason, all six first-round quarterbacks—and several others picked later—made their NFL debuts. While cheering for their new franchise quarterbacks, fans also faced the reality that not all will succeed. Historically, even in strong quarterback classes, only three or four typically thrive as starters.
Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears
The No. 1 pick from USC dazzled fans in his debut. Though the Bears didn’t score, Williams displayed his dynamic talent, making a standout 26-yard throw to tight end Cole Kmet while on the run, showing poise amid pressure. He ended his first appearance with four completions on seven attempts for 95 yards, plus a 13-yard rush.
Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders
Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick, made an immediate impact by launching a 42-yard pass to Dyami Brown, displaying his elite arm talent. He capped a drive with a three-yard rushing touchdown, completing two of his three passes for 45 yards.
Drake Maye, New England Patriots
Maye also only attempted three passes, struggling to generate excitement with two completions for 19 yards. His limited action was overshadowed by his counterpart, who made a bigger splash.
Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons
Penix, the eighth overall pick, had a mixed debut, connecting on nine of 16 passes for 104 yards. Despite some inaccuracies, his arm strength was clear as he navigated shorter routes effectively.
J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings
McCarthy, chosen tenth overall, initially struggled with an interception but rebounded magnificently, throwing two touchdown passes to Trishton Jackson. He finished strong, completing 11 of 17 for 188 yards.
Bo Nix, Denver Broncos
Nix started off shaky with near turnovers but found his groove, leading to a touchdown throw to Marvin Mims Jr. He wrapped up his debut with 15 completions out of 21 attempts for 125 yards.
Spencer Rattler, New Orleans Saints
A fifth-round pick, Rattler showcased resilience with a rushing touchdown and a solid passing performance, finishing 9 of 17 for 70 yards during a game-winning drive.
Joe Milton, New England Patriots
In a surprising twist, Milton shone in a game largely focused on Maye. He delivered a stunning 38-yard touchdown pass and turned heads with his athleticism on the ground.
In other news: Giants’ first-round pick, Malik Nabers, suffered an injury during practice, raising concerns for fans.
