Just six days after the Carolina Panthers made the bold decision to bench their top draft pick from 2023, the team celebrated its first victory of the season, thanks to the seasoned quarterback Andy Dalton.
Dalton wasted no time in showcasing his experience, leading the Panthers to a touchdown on their opening drive, setting a positive tone for the game. Overall, the Panthers racked up an impressive 437 yards of total offense, with Dalton completing 26 of 37 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns to Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen, and Chuba Hubbard.
In stark contrast to their previous outings—where they only managed a combined 13 points in the first two games with Bryce Young—Carolina exploded for 36 points in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders, marking their first game scoring 30 or more points since last December.
This time, the Panthers offense didn’t just look competent; it was downright electric. Although they faced a Raiders defense that has struggled, allowing over 300 yards in each of their first three games, the transformation in Carolina’s offense with Dalton leading is undeniable.
Head coach Dave Canales admitted that the decision to bench Young was difficult. However, after reviewing game film, he felt it was essential for the team’s success. Canales knew the stakes were high; a loss could cost him both the locker room’s trust and potentially his job, especially in this first year as head coach.
While the Panthers have not given up on Young, it was evident that the first two games with him were not up to par. After securing their first win, the Panthers are now eager to prepare for their Week 4 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
