Patrick Mahomes Throws Behind-the-Back Pass to Tease Travis Kelce

There’s no denying it; the Kansas City Chiefs are the standout team in the NFL.

As the 2024 NFL season kicks off, the Chiefs have already made their mark by becoming one of only nine teams to secure back-to-back Super Bowl victories. Even more impressively, they’ve reached the Super Bowl four times in five years, winning three of those matchups.

It’s safe to say that they’re the team everyone else is gunning for this season.

A significant factor in their success is the dynamic between quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce.

Since Mahomes took over, Kelce has thrived, amassing 7,428 yards and 52 touchdowns—not even factoring in playoff stats.

Currently, Mahomes and Kelce hold the record for the most postseason touchdowns at 16, overtaking the previous record set by Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski.

That said, their relationship isn’t always smooth sailing. Even when tensions flare, they often manage to steal the show on the field.

In a recent interview shared on the Chiefs’ Instagram page, Mahomes talked about a jaw-dropping behind-the-back pass to Kelce during their preseason face-off with the Detroit Lions, which came out of frustration.

“Long story short, Travis missed his route,” Mahomes explained. “So, in a moment of annoyance, I threw a behind-the-back pass. But hey, now it’s a highlight!”

Though surprised by the improvisation, the interviewer captured Mahomes’ point about adaptability in football.

“That’s my message to everyone,” Mahomes added. “You can’t plan it.”

Despite the impressive play, the Chiefs narrowly lost to the Lions at 24-23. However, it’s just preseason, and one game doesn’t define an entire campaign.

As we’ve witnessed time and again, both stars are capable of delivering under pressure. If their chemistry thrives this year, the Chiefs could be on the verge of making NFL history with a three-peat.
