The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced their starting quarterback for the upcoming Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos.
Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that Justin Fields, who started in last week’s victory, will be under center again. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport broke the news on Twitter this Tuesday.
Russell Wilson missed the season opener due to calf tightness, which cropped up late in the week. Although he is feeling better, coach Tomlin indicated that they are proceeding with Fields as the starter.
Tomlin shared, “We’re preparing as if Justin (Fields) is going to be our quarterback. Speculation is useless. Russell’s hurt.”
Wilson is being closely monitored, but whether he will play against his former team remains uncertain.
Wilson mentioned he “feels better today than over the weekend.” Coach Tomlin said they will evaluate his participation to see if he can protect himself and perform effectively before deciding on his inclusion.
Justin Fields had a solid debut last week, completing 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards in the win over the Falcons. After the game, he reflected on the emotional experience of playing at home.
“Personally, it’s great,” Fields said. “I have family and friends here, and getting a win against my hometown team was amazing.”
When asked about his starting status following the victory, Fields remained focused on the team’s success rather than personal accolades.
“I just came in wanting a win, and I’m glad we did. So where I end up on the depth chart isn’t my focus—winning is everything to me.”
The Steelers will aim for a 2-0 start for the first time since 2020 with Fields likely leading the charge.
