Following the trade of top wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, the Pittsburgh Steelers were expected to bolster their wide receiver corps. While they did draft rookie Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the team hasn’t made the big splash many anticipated.
Rumors have swirled around the Steelers pursuing disgruntled wide receivers like Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers or Tyler Lockett from the Seattle Seahawks, but no deals have materialized yet. Despite addressing several needs this offseason, there’s still room for improvement at the receiver position.

Pittsburgh’s general manager, Omar Khan, shared a candid response regarding the team’s pursuit of a receiver at this stage. He was straightforward and didn’t beat around the bush.
“There’s nothing in the works right now,” Khan mentioned in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If an opportunity arises to discuss a potential addition, whether through a free agent or a player who’s available, we’ll explore it. But our primary focus currently is on our current squad.”
While trade discussions can always change rapidly, with the regular season fast approaching, the odds of a significant trade happening seem slim. The Steelers might have a surprise up their sleeves before the season kicks off, but realistically, this issue might resurface around the trade deadline when Pittsburgh has a clearer picture of their needs.
“This evaluation period isn’t limited to just the receiver group,” Khan emphasized. “We’re constantly engaging with other teams, keeping an eye on potential opportunities in the market. If there’s a viable situation or player that fits our plans, we’ll certainly consider it. Otherwise, we’ll pass.”
The Steelers are likely to be active near the trade deadline, particularly if they start the season strongly. With new quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson on board, Pittsburgh is aiming for another playoff appearance, potentially their fourth in five seasons.
