The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a smart move by signing former first-round defensive back C.J. Henderson to their practice squad. This addition could be key for both Henderson and the Steelers.
Originally drafted ninth overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020, Henderson’s NFL career has yet to match expectations. However, joining a supportive team and coaching staff in Pittsburgh might be just what he needs to flourish.
During his stint with the Jaguars from 2020 to 2021, Henderson played in 10 games, racking up 44 tackles, six pass deflections, and an interception. He was later traded to the Carolina Panthers, where he continued to develop, contributing 31 tackles and two pass deflections in his final ten games with the team that season.
In 2022, Henderson secured a more prominent role with the Panthers, featuring in all 17 games and starting 10. He managed to compile 58 tackles, six pass deflections, and two interceptions. Last season, he recorded 39 tackles, two pass deflections, and one sack over 12 games, seven of which he started.
Though Henderson signed with the Houston Texans earlier this year, he was released in August as the team finalized their roster. The Steelers have now stepped in, offering him another chance to showcase his skills—skills that were honed during his time at the University of Florida, where he tallied 93 tackles and six interceptions in just 30 college games.
While Henderson has struggled to find consistency in the NFL, he’s now under the guidance of head coach Mike Tomlin, who is known for maximizing player potential. The Steelers are currently riding high with a 3-0 record, boasting the top-ranked defense in the league, allowing only 229 yards and 8.7 points per game.
This Sunday, as the Steelers face off against the Indianapolis Colts, Henderson will be focusing on learning the playbook with hopes of making his way onto the active roster soon.
