Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has kept fans on their toes regarding the starting quarterback for Week 7. While he has made a decision, he’s opted to keep the details “in-house.”

However, it seems that Steelers wide receiver George Pickens accidentally spilled the beans during a post-practice chat with reporters.
In a video shared by ESPN’s Brooke Pryor on X, Pickens discussed the additional time he’s spent with Wilson, hinting at Wilson’s first start. This might have just let the cat out of the bag regarding Tomlin’s starter announcement for Sunday.
If Wilson does take the helm, it makes sense; he brings more experience compared to Justin Fields, who has shown promise through six starts. Fields has led the Steelers to a solid 4-2 record, amassing 1,106 passing yards, five touchdowns, and only one interception, alongside 231 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
Despite his solid performance, Fields has shouldered the blame for his potential benching, stating he hasn’t “played well enough.” This humility is commendable, yet it’s hard to argue that his contribution hasn’t been crucial to the team’s success.
This situation is particularly interesting given Wilson’s preseason challenges with a calf injury that sidelined him for the first six games. Now healthy, he’s ready to step onto the field again.
Wilson had a respectable season with the Denver Broncos previously, throwing for 3,070 yards, with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions, yet he fell out of favor with his former coach. The Steelers picked him up on a one-year, $1.2 million deal, a real steal considering his pedigree as a Super Bowl champion.
The optimistic takeaway? If Wilson starts but struggles, Fields is right there, ready to reclaim his spot.
