Fortunately, NFL insider Ian Rapoport indicates that Addison likely did not suffer a significant injury.
Before his injury, Addison contributed with three receptions totaling 35 yards. Quarterback Sam Darnold targeted him four times in the second quarter, leading to key catches of 16, 13, and six yards during a 99-yard touchdown drive that stretched Minnesota’s lead to 14-3.
In the game’s first quarter, Addison drew a crucial 36-yard pass interference penalty, advancing the ball to the Giants’ 27-yard line, setting the stage for the Vikings’ first touchdown, scored by Aaron Jones.
“I’m feeling great. This is a fantastic way to kick off my journey with the Vikings, and as a team, we accomplished our goals,” Jones shared via the team’s transcript.
Prior to his ankle setback, Addison had been on the injury report due to a different ankle issue from training camp. Although he was limited early in the previous week, he returned to full practice on Friday.
Despite the early-season injury, the prognosis appears positive for the Vikings’ offense.
Darnold had a standout debut for Minnesota, becoming just the third player in franchise history to start the season by completing 12 or more consecutive passes. Legendary players Kirk Cousins and Fran Tarkenton previously held this record.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell praised Darnold’s performance, noting, “For a guy to start 12-for-12 and maintain composure all day is huge for us.” His only interception was a result of a deflected pass.
Among his highlights, Darnold completed a beautiful 44-yard throw to star receiver Justin Jefferson, who remarked, “We practiced that play just days ago. Everything fell into place perfectly during the game.” He described the throw as “a beautiful ball.”
Darnold emphasized the importance of the win, stating, “It’s always great to get a victory, whether it’s Week 1 or Week 12. We’re pleased with it but know there’s more to achieve.”
