With the dawn of a new month comes a fresh batch of Social Security payments for the millions of beneficiaries nationwide.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) disburses retirement, disability, and survivor benefits monthly, but the payment dates can vary among recipients. In 2024, an estimated 68 million Americans will receive Social Security benefits each month, totaling around $1.5 trillion for the year, as per SSA projections.
The timing of benefit deposits into bank accounts is determined by the recipient’s birth date and the type of benefit they receive. Most recipients are paid based on their birth month—the earlier in the month you were born, the earlier you’ll receive your payment.
There are exceptions to this rule, such as those who have been receiving retirement benefits for over 27 years typically getting paid on the third of the month. Those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) usually get paid first.
For SSI recipients, there will be two payments in August. Normally paid on the first of the month, this year the payment will be issued on August 30 instead of September 1, which falls on a Sunday—a non-issuance day for the SSA.
In a 2022 blog post, the SSA explained, “We do this to ensure you are not financially affected and do not have to wait past the first of the month to receive your payment. This adjustment does not mean you received a duplicate payment the previous month, so there’s no need to report it.”
