This week, Social Security retirees will not receive their checks, as confirmed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) payment schedule.
The SSA distributes Social Security payments monthly, assisting approximately 70 million individuals. The timing of these payments depends on the recipient’s birth date and the type of benefits they receive.
If your retirement claim began after May 1997, payments will be made either in the second or third week of the month. Payments are dispersed in the second week for claims starting on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, while those starting from Thursday to Sunday will be paid in the third week.
Since August this year began on a Thursday, payments will be issued next week, starting on Wednesday, August 14, for recipients with birthdays from the 1st to the 10th. Those born between the 11th and the 20th will receive their payments on August 21, while individuals with birthdays from the 21st to the 31st will have their benefits disbursed on August 28.
Meanwhile, some recipients have already received their checks, particularly those on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which offers monthly benefits to eligible adults and children with disabilities or those aged 65 and older. Additionally, individuals who started claiming retirement benefits before May 1997 may also have received their payments by now.
If you haven’t seen your expected payment, the SSA advises waiting three business days before reaching out to them.
Later this month, SSI beneficiaries will receive an early payment for September since the usual payment date of September 1 falls on a weekend. The SSA emphasizes that this advance payment does not indicate a duplicate payment for August, so no need to worry about reporting it.
The benefit amount varies among Social Security recipients, based on factors like the age at which benefits were claimed and an individual’s highest-earning work years. As of June 2024, the average benefit for retired workers was approximately $1,869.77, according to the latest SSA data.
