Meet the Winner
Introducing Matilda, a joyful companion to Moe McGuinty and his wife, Wendy. Living in scenic Mattawa, Ontario, Matilda loves exploring the numerous hiking trails and backroads in the area.
“She adores swimming! We have to call her back to shore, or she’ll happily paddle around forever,” laughed McGuinty. “Honestly, she’s the best dog we could have wished for.”
Meet the Finalists
Oscar was once a stray, trying his best to fend for himself. Joan Martinez and her wife, Sandra, took him in with one condition: “You must promise to stay indoors— and I’ll ensure you’re well-fed.”
“He has happily settled in and is living his best life now,” said Martinez. Teaching Oscar to respond to their dinner bell has become a fun part of their daily routine, especially since he now eagerly waits at the fridge whenever it’s open.
Splitting his time between Manhattan and Queens, Oscar has certainly carved out a special place in their family. “We cherish our time together,” Martinez added.
Next is Custer, an energetic yellow Lab who’s been a loving part of David Hulsander’s family since 2015. After losing their previous dog, Boze, they were eager for a new adventure buddy.
Named after David’s wife’s family name and a nearby town, Custer enjoys everything from fetching and hunting grouse to swimming and playing in the snow. “He responds to a whistle and loves his treats!” said Hulsander, who enjoys sharing funny videos of Custer’s snow antics.
With plenty of open space to roam, Custer is a true joy, especially when his grandsons visit.
Finally, meet Bo, the tiny dog with a big heart, purchased by Diana Anderson during the pandemic. Bo provided essential support after Diana faced the heartbreaking loss of her husband to liver cancer just a year after bringing him home.
“He was my rock during a tough time,” she reminisced. “Bo is the sweetest companion, full of love and hugs.”
Although Bo isn’t very friendly with strangers due to his limited socialization, Diana wouldn’t change him for the world, emphasizing, “Dogs offer unconditional love that’s simply irreplaceable.”
