Every parent, whether of kids or pets, wants to keep an eye on their loved ones when they’re apart. Thanks to modern technology, it’s easier than ever to check in with just a tap.
Emilia, a pet owner, shared her experience with Amazon while waiting for her husband. “I wanted to see how my pets were doing, so I decided to chat with my cat through ‘Alexa’,” she said. Boredom kicked in, and she needed to connect.
As soon as Emilia’s cat heard her voice through the camera, she jumped closer, eager for that familiar sound. But what happened next caught Emilia off guard.
“My cat recognized my voice and tried to show affection by rubbing her cheek against the camera—she accidentally knocked it over!” Emilia recounted.
Even after the camera tipped, the curious cat continued to sniff around, searching for the source of Emilia’s soothing voice, puzzled as to why she wasn’t there in person.
Do Cats Recognize Their Owners’ Voices?
Emilia’s cat wasn’t just reacting randomly—research indicates that felines can indeed recognize their owners’ voices.
Ethologist Charlotte de Mouzon conducted studies to see how various cat breeds reacted to their owners’ voices compared to strangers. According to National Geographic, results showed that familiar voices elicited distinct responses such as tail swishing, ear pivoting, and pausing during grooming.
Interestingly, cats didn’t react to their owners speaking to others or to unfamiliar voices. This research confirms that cats not only recognize but also respond to their owners’ voices.
