From Underdog to Superstar: The Unexpected Transformation of a ‘Runt’ Kitten

The old adage “Don’t judge a book by its cover” applies just as well to pet ownership. You never really know what surprises await you when you bring home a new furry friend.

A TikTok user, @lacebaseouterspace, thought she was adopting the “runt of the litter” kitten. Typically, the runt is the smallest or weakest of the group, but this kitten had other plans!

In a TikTok video from August 10, we see little Ruby, who could easily fit in the palm of a hand as a kitten. Generally, female cats weigh between eight and ten pounds, according to an article from Vet Explains Pets. But each cat is unique; some are smaller or larger, which is perfectly normal.

Fast forward, and Ruby has shed her “little” title and filled out to a surprising 22 pounds!

The video’s caption dubbed her “Sweet chonky ruby girl,” and viewers got a good laugh when they saw Ruby’s hefty figure. While her weight means more cuddly stuff for her owner, Ruby seemed less than thrilled about her online debut. With a disgruntled look, she appeared to scowl at the camera, clearly not wanting to be the center of attention.

Viewer Reactions

This unexpected TikTok clip drew more than 1.1 million views, along with 116,300 likes and 325 comments.

One user quipped, “The look on her face, ‘I know you’re not telling everybody my business.'” Another added, “That is one very well-fed cat.” A third chimed in with humor: “Finally made it to the best part of TikTok, chubby kitty tok.” And one TikToker shared their experience of having a runt as well: “My runt cannot control himself around food, runt trauma!”
