Heartwarming Reunion: Owner Finds Cat Years Later Who Still Recognized Her

A woman named Aurora experienced a miraculous sign from her late husband when she received an unexpected call about her long-lost cat, Fat Boy, who disappeared years earlier.

About two to three years ago, Aurora and her husband lived in San Jose with their beloved pet and a newborn. Their lives turned upside down when Fat Boy went missing, leading to an exhausting search that ultimately ended in heartbreak.

As the years passed, Aurora lost not only her cat but also her husband. However, in February of this year, she received an astonishing phone call from the San Francisco SPCA, which she interpreted as a message from her husband.

During a routine spay and neuter program, SPCA volunteers discovered a stray cat with a microchip linked to an owner. That owner turned out to be Aurora and, to her surprise, it was her Fat Boy that had been found.

A video shared on the @sanfranciscospca TikTok account showcased their emotional reunion. Aurora entered the room where Fat Boy was waiting, and it wasn’t long before the two recognized each other. Both were overjoyed, with Aurora shedding tears as Fat Boy snuggled up to her, clearly remembering his owner.

Aurora expressed that reuniting with Fat Boy felt like her husband was somehow guiding this incredible moment.

The San Francisco SPCA shared this touching video on National Check the Chip Day to underline the importance of microchips in reuniting lost pets with their families.

‘Happy Tears’

The heartwarming reunion quickly went viral, amassing over 1.3 million views and 161,900 likes on TikTok by Thursday. One viewer commented, “I’m so glad they were reunited,” while another said, “I’m so happy for them. It made me both cry and smile.”

One viewer noted Fat Boy’s initial annoyance at being lost but quickly realized he was just happy to see his owner again. Others highlighted the need to microchip their pets: “Oh happy tears!! I’m making an appointment to microchip my baby after seeing this!!”

How Microchips Work

Microchips offer a reliable solution for preventing the heartache of losing a pet. The small device is inserted under the animal’s skin and can be scanned to reveal a unique ID number. This number connects to a national database that holds the owner’s contact information, making it easier for shelters or vets to reunite pets with their families.

A microchip can remain functional for up to 25 years, as noted in a Better Vet article. To ensure successful reunions, pet owners should keep their contact details updated in the microchip database, as about 72% of microchipped pets are successfully reunited with their families.
