Meet Lola, a 13-year-old senior dog who has had quite a tumultuous journey since being adopted 12 years ago. Originally found as a stray in 2012, she was rescued by a nonprofit organization called Animal Education and Rescue (AEAR), which helped her find a loving home for seven years.
Unfortunately, Lola’s luck took a turn when animal control in Chicago picked her up recently. Thanks to her microchip, AEAR was able to reunite with her. A shocking July 31 Facebook post from AEAR outlined the struggles Lola faced since her adoption that ultimately led her back to the shelter.
The previous owner admitted to AEAR that they had no experience with dogs and let Lola roam freely around the neighborhood. Lola’s situation worsened when the owner’s son decided to give her to a man to drop off at a local shelter. Within an hour of being rescued from North Chicago Animal Control, AEAR had Lola back in their care.
The AEAR team soon discovered that the most recent family didn’t want Lola due to her age and health issues, making it hard for them to find someone willing to adopt her. Determined to give Lola a brighter future, AEAR promptly took her to a groomer for an urgent nail trim and assessed her troubling weight, which has impacted her mobility.
“Finding a new home for older dogs is challenging,” a spokesperson noted. “The reality is that seniors often struggle to find families.” However, Lola is now in a foster home with someone who is committed to caring for her for the rest of her life if needed.
