Last night, Vice President Kamala Harris was officially named the Democratic nominee, but the excitement continues with two more days left in the party’s convention happening in Chicago.
While Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, campaigned in Minnesota on Tuesday evening, Walz is set to take the stage for his acceptance speech on Wednesday.
Here’s what’s on tap for Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention:
Speakers, Guests & Performers
Before Walz addresses the crowd, attendees can look forward to remarks from notable figures like former President Bill Clinton, ex- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Wednesday.
Among the speeches, Pelosi’s is particularly anticipated as she played a vital role in advocating for Biden’s replacement as the party’s nominee. While she rallied behind Biden on earlier convention days, her address will be the first time the audience hears from her directly.
Adding some star power to the night, actress Mindy Kaling will serve as the celebrity host. Kaling, known for her roles in The Office and The Mindy Project, is not just a talented entertainer; she has co-chaired fundraisers for Biden’s 2020 campaign and showcased her Indian heritage in various ways, including a viral cooking video with then-Senator Kamala Harris.
This video gained renewed attention after being shared by former President Donald Trump, who used it to question Harris’s racial identity.
‘A Fight for Our Freedoms’
The theme for Wednesday’s events will center around Harris and Walz’s commitment to fighting for freedoms. A Harris campaign release stated that she has dedicated her career to advocating for Americans’ rights, and highlighted Walz as a defender of fundamental freedoms for working families.
They emphasized, “Donald Trump used his term to undermine our rights, and is again pushing an extreme agenda that threatens our cherished freedoms,” referring to the past administration’s policies.
On Tuesday, delegates celebrated Harris’s nomination with an enthusiastic ceremonial vote that drew attention for its energy, impressing even conservative commentators. The scene included a surprise performance from rapper Lil Jon, who got the crowd moving with “Turn Down for What,” combined with custom songs for each state’s voting report.
Adding to the lineup of speakers were Michelle Obama, Doug Emhoff, Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and former Trump administration press secretary Stephanie Grisham. The keynote address by Barack Obama resonated with the audience as he stated, “America’s ready for a new chapter. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris, and Kamala Harris is ready for the job.”
