Former judge Michael Luttig has made headlines with his strong endorsement of Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election. In a message released by CNN, Luttig stated, “I will unhesitatingly vote for the Democratic Party’s candidate for President.”
Despite having different views on various policies, Luttig stressed that this election revolves around the core values of American Democracy, the Constitution, and the Rule of Law. “These are the principles all Americans should be focused on,” he asserted.
Luttig’s endorsement is significant given his conservative roots. Appointed by President George H.W. Bush to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, he earned a reputation as a leading conservative figure. Though he was once a contender for a Supreme Court seat, he was ultimately overlooked in favor of John Roberts and Samuel Alito.
In his recent commentary, Luttig criticized the choice of Donald Trump as the Republican nominee, declaring him “singularly unfit to embody and represent America’s sacred Democracy, Constitution, and Rule of Law.” He passionately urged that partisan differences be put aside in order to block Trump from returning to power, highlighting that his stance on Harris’s policy viewpoints is secondary to this urgent issue.
As he put it, “The time for America’s choosing has come,” encouraging all Americans to reaffirm their commitment to the principles that uphold the nation.
