There is a new frontrunner in the race to become Kamala Harris’ running mate, as indicated by a prediction betting platform.
Harris is currently the favorite to be the Democratic Party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election, as Joe Biden threw his support behind her when he recently announced that he would not be running for president.
In light of this, Harris has garnered enough support from delegates to secure the Democratic nomination for the 2024 presidential election. Now, the focus shifts to who will be chosen as her vice-presidential running mate.
A poll conducted by Public Policy Polling before Biden’s endorsement suggested that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was the top choice to be Harris’ VP, indicating that Harris could defeat Donald Trump in a presidential election with Shapiro by her side.
However, a new frontrunner has emerged on the online prediction betting platform Polymarket. They have named Arizona Senator and former astronaut Mark Kelly as the most popular choice for the Democratic nominee for Vice President. Members of Polymarket place cryptocurrency bets on various event outcomes.
According to Polymarket, 32% of participants believe that Kelly will be chosen as the VP nominee, with Shapiro following at 24%. Other candidates like North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear are also in the running.
Mark Kelly’s background as a U.S. Navy pilot, astronaut, and currently a senator from Arizona makes him a strong contender for the position. Advocates believe that Kelly’s military experience and representation of a border state would be beneficial in challenging Republican assertions on immigration policies.
There is speculation that Harris may select a white male running mate to appeal to white voters, given her background as a Black and Asian woman. Strategists like Steve Schmidt suggest that this demographic balance could be crucial for their campaign.
