Republican Liz Cheney has urged anti-abortion voters to consider supporting Vice President Kamala Harris, despite her liberal position on abortion rights. Cheney, a former representative from Wyoming, has been actively campaigning with the Democratic nominee this election season, emphasizing the need for “compassion” on the issue, which she believes former President Donald Trump cannot provide.
While speaking in Wisconsin with Harris, Cheney expressed her concerns: “I’m pro-life, and I’ve been deeply troubled by what I’ve seen happen in many states since Dobbs. The medical treatment women need is being denied due to providers fearing legal repercussions.” She added, “Even from a pro-life perspective, I don’t think Texas should be allowed to access women’s medical records as they currently argue.”
Cheney believes it’s essential for the federal government to step in and protect women from the negative consequences of current state laws.
Kamala Harris’ Stance on Abortion
Harris has consistently advocated for more progressive abortion policies throughout her career, starting as California’s attorney general and later as a senator. She strongly opposes federal abortion bans and has called the reversal of Roe v. Wade “horrifying,” stating her intention to restore it as law and even considering abolishing the filibuster in Congress to facilitate its passage.
Donald Trump’s Abortion Policy
Although Trump initially lauded the end of Roe v. Wade, he has toned down his abortion rhetoric following disappointing Republican midterm results. He claims the issue should be left to the states, supporting legislation that allows individual states to set their own abortion policies.
Senator JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, has indicated that Trump would veto any national abortion ban. Just recently on Truth Social, Trump remarked: “EVERYONE KNOWS I WOULD NOT SUPPORT A FEDERAL ABORTION BAN, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.” He affirmed his belief that it should be up to states based on the voters’ wishes.
Did Dick Cheney Endorse Kamala Harris?
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has revealed he plans to vote for Kamala Harris this November. His daughter Liz announced this endorsement at a Texas event, where she confirmed his choice. In a subsequent statement, the former vice president emphasized that “no one poses a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” reflecting on Trump’s attempts to overturn the last election. He urged citizens to prioritize country over party loyalty, declaring his vote for Vice President Harris.
