As the vice presidential debate approaches on October 1, Gov. Tim Walz and Sen. JD Vance are gearing up in very distinct ways.
This debate might be notable, given that former President Donald Trump has signaled he won’t participate in any further debates with Vice President Kamala Harris.
Walz’s Debate Preparation Team
Pete Buttigieg
Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a skilled communicator and regular Fox News contributor, is stepping in to help Walz. He’s been simulating Vance during practice debates, challenging Walz with tough questions.
Zayn Siddique
Siddique, a prominent attorney and advisor, previously assisted Biden and Harris in their debate preparations. His extensive policy knowledge will be invaluable for Walz.
Liz Allen
Campaign chief of staff Liz Allen brings her experience from managing successful vice presidential runs, including helping Harris during her campaign alongside Biden in 2020.
Chris Schmitter
Schmitter, Walz’s chief of staff and a senior advisor to Harris, has been instrumental in Walz’s rise to the governorship in Minnesota and knows his candidate inside out.
Additional Team Members:
- Kate Berner, who predicts Vance’s strategy, comes from Biden’s staff.
- Michael Tyler, communications director for the Harris campaign, adds to the team’s experience.
Vance’s Debate Strategy
Jacob Reses
An old friend and chief of staff, Reses handles day-to-day political strategies for Vance and has valuable connections in the GOP.
Jason Miller
Miller, a senior advisor from the Trump campaign, previously collaborated with Trump for his debates, bringing that experience to Vance’s prep.
Unlike Walz, Vance prefers to keep his preparation less formal, stating that his main focus is engaging with everyday Americans.
