Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, contradicted Donald Trump by stating that Trump did not speak negatively about Milwaukee during a recent meeting.
Trump faced criticism for reportedly calling the city of Wisconsin “horrible” during a meeting with Republican lawmakers at the U.S. Capitol last Thursday, just before the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee scheduled for July 15-18.
In response, Steven Cheung denied the reports on X, stating that Trump did not make such negative remarks about Milwaukee. Instead, he focused on crimes and voter fraud.
During an interview on Fox News‘ Hannity, Johnson, a Louisiana Republican and Trump supporter, mentioned that he did not hear Trump’s alleged comments about Milwaukee, despite sitting next to Sean Hannity.
Johnson clarified that Trump did not make such remarks and praised his energy and enthusiasm during the meeting. Other Republicans, like Bryan Steil, also refuted claims of Trump criticizing Milwaukee.
When questioned by political director Matt Smith at WISN in Milwaukee, Scott Fitzgerald explained that Trump’s comments were in response to concerns about election integrity in Milwaukee.
Following these reports, Democrats, including President Joe Biden and Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, defended the city, with Mayor Johnson pointing out the challenges faced during Trump’s presidency.
Recent polls in the state show Trump and Biden tied with 44% each in voter support.
