A former staffer of Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson has been let go following a controversial social media post regarding the attempted shooting of ex-President Donald Trump.
The incident occurred on July 13 during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman aimed shots at Trump, slightly grazing his right ear with a bullet.
In a statement, Thompson mentioned that he was informed about the post made by the staff member, leading to her termination. However, he didn’t disclose the staffer’s identity or the exact content of the post. Screenshots online suggest the post was made by Jacqueline Marsaw, who previously worked as a case manager and field director for Thompson.
Marsaw’s post, which was later removed, joked about shooting accuracy, prompting criticism from various figures like Representative Matt Gaetz and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
Thompson had previously introduced a bill suggesting the removal of Secret Service protection for individuals convicted of felonies, mentioning Trump specifically if convicted in legal proceedings.
Despite the uproar following the post, Thompson reiterated his stance against political violence and expressed relief that Trump was unharmed.
Following the incident, the FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Crooks and confirmed the death of Corey Comperatore, a former firefighter who was present at the rally.
