If Donald Trump makes a comeback to the White House, he’s got plans for Elon Musk—specifically, a new government role that he dubs “secretary of cost-cutting.”
During an appearance on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Trump revealed this potential position. Musk has shown his support for Trump throughout the campaign, even joining him at a recent rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he emphasized the importance of voter registration and praised Trump’s resilience.
During the interview, Bartiromo pointed out the need to reduce government waste, prompting Trump to respond with a strong affirmation about its existence. When asked which agencies he might cut, Trump deferred the question, indicating that Musk is eager to take on cost-cutting responsibilities due to his impressive background in business.
Trump elaborated, “He’s not just a science and rockets guy; he’s a brilliant cost cutter. He believes he can reduce expenses without impacting anyone negatively.”
Bartiromo then questioned if Musk would occupy a cabinet position, to which Trump clarified that Musk isn’t interested in that; instead, he’ll focus solely on cost-cutting. A brand-new title would be created for this purpose.
Musk’s name came up several times in the interview, with Trump mentioning that Musk promised to reach Mars by the end of his administration, aiming to do so ahead of other nations like China and Russia.
At the Butler rally, Musk showcased his ambition by wearing a shirt that read “Occupy Mars,” reflecting his company SpaceX’s plans for a Mars mission. Recently, Musk also revealed new Tesla designs during an event titled “We, Robot,” although public reaction was mixed, resulting in a drop of Tesla’s stock price by 7.8 percent the following day.
