Controversy erupted on Thursday when former President Donald Trump stated that the civilian Presidential Medal of Freedom is “much better” than the military’s Medal of Honor during an event at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, titled “Fighting Antisemitism.”
In his remarks, Trump aimed to compliment Miriam Adelson, the widow of a major GOP donor, whom he awarded the Medal of Freedom in 2018. He noted that Medal of Honor recipients are often soldiers “either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead.”
“It’s actually much better because everyone [who] gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they’re soldiers,” Trump explained. “She gets it, and she’s a healthy, beautiful woman, and they’re rated equal.”
His comments sparked backlash from various quarters. The Veterans for Responsible Leadership, a bipartisan PAC, condemned Trump’s remarks, claiming he values his own awards over those for military service. Lieutenant Colonel Amy McGrath, a decorated Marine and former political candidate, called his comments “offensive” to veterans. She emphasized the bravery represented by the Medal of Honor, saying it deserves significant respect.
Actor Wendell Pierce also criticized Trump, stating on social media that he needed to apologize to veterans. “Their valor should never be forgotten. Donald Trump owes them an apology. Shame,” Pierce added.
Understanding the Medal of Honor
The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration in the U.S., awarded by the president in Congress’s name. It recognizes members of the Armed Forces who demonstrate extraordinary bravery at the risk of their own life. There are three variations of the medal: one for the Air Force, one for the Army, and a third for the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard.
Since its inception, the Medal of Honor has been awarded to 3,519 individuals, with the most being given during the Civil War and World War II. Notably, only 18.5 percent of recipients were honored posthumously, countering Trump’s implications.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom Explained
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is recognized as America’s highest civilian honor. Initially established in 1945 by President Truman, it was expanded under President Kennedy to include various contributions to national security, world peace, and cultural endeavors.
From 1963 to July 2024, the Medal of Freedom has been awarded 653 times. Interestingly, Barack Obama awarded the most during his presidency, while Trump awarded it to 24 individuals, including prominent allies.
Are the Medals Comparable?
There isn’t an official rating system that allows for direct comparison between the two prestigious awards. Trump’s assertion of superiority for the Presidential Medal of Freedom seems to be a personal viewpoint rather than a recognized standard. His remarks regarding Medal of Honor recipients also misrepresent the nature of the award and those who receive it.
