NASCAR has seen an exciting transformation with the launch of 23XI Racing, a team co-founded by Denny Hamlin, a seasoned driver from Joe Gibbs Racing, and NBA legend Michael Jordan. Hamlin recently shared that Jordan’s approach to the team feels more “paranoid” than controlling, according to ESPN.
Although Jordan is a heavyweight in sports, he takes a thoughtful approach to his role, ensuring not to interfere excessively with management.
23XI Racing was established in 2020 after rumors of Hamlin and Jordan buying a NASCAR team became reality. The team’s name reflects the numbers 23 and 11, representing their respective legacies. Since its inception, 23XI Racing has tackled important issues like diversity and has modernized operations within the team.
Hamlin noted, “If anything, he’s more paranoid about becoming too involved. But we reassure him his participation is crucial and greatly appreciated by our employees.”
With Jordan being the first Black principal owner of a full-time NASCAR Cup team since 1973, his ownership marks a significant milestone for inclusivity in the sport. His interest in NASCAR extends back years, having initially connected with Hamlin during a 2010 Charlotte Bobcats game.
Despite his superstar status, Jordan gives Hamlin considerable freedom in decision-making, trusting his judgment even when he might not fully agree with it. “It really puts pressure on me, though, because I want to uphold his legacy and the high standards he represents,” Hamlin added.
From signing Bubba Wallace, the only Black full-time driver in the Cup Series, to celebrating a major win at Talladega, 23XI Racing is on an upward trajectory. Their state-of-the-art facility, Airspeed, and plans to welcome Tyler Reddick next season only reinforce their promising future in NASCAR.
