Joe Gibbs Racing has shared the heartbreaking news of Andy “Doggie” Nelson’s passing, a valuable member of their ARCA Menards Series team and a cherished figure in the NASCAR world.
A report by ARCA Racing confirmed that Nelson died peacefully in his sleep, leaving behind a lasting impact at just 39 years old.
In their emotional tribute, JGR remembered Nelson as a “beloved member” of both their team and the wider NASCAR community, stating on social media:
“Andy was a beloved member of our ARCA team and the NASCAR garage. He had a passion for racing and was always willing to lend a helping hand. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Doggie and praying for his family and friends.”
Joining JGR in 2019, Nelson worked as an interior and tire specialist, significantly contributing to their victories in the ARCA Menards Series East, including championship wins in the last two seasons.
His impressive career began well before JGR, where he gained expertise working with esteemed teams like Blaney Racing, Turner Scott Motorsports, and MDM Motorsports, playing key roles in numerous triumphs, including Ryan Blaney’s first NASCAR touring series win in 2011 and championships for Justin Haley and Harrison Burton.
Founded in 1992 by former NFL coach Joe Gibbs, Joe Gibbs Racing is recognized as one of NASCAR’s top teams, boasting numerous Cup Series championships. Nelson’s influence on their recent successes in ARCA highlights his expertise and significance in the team’s legacy.
The motorsports community is mourning Nelson’s loss. Crew member Rob Beattie from the World of Outlaws shared his sorrow on X, saying, “Yesterday I received some news from back east that made me sit down for a little bit. The world lost one of the good ones yesterday. Andy (Doggie) Nelson. R.I.P my friend.”
