Max Verstappen didn’t hold back after what he labeled a frustrating 2024 Italian Grand Prix for Red Bull Racing. With a sixth-place finish at Monza, the three-time champion criticized the team’s strategy and technical difficulties, leaving him feeling like he was “in no man’s land.”
Following the race, Verstappen was vocal about various issues he faced, emphasizing that the team’s management fell short. As he stated in an interview, quoted by Motorsport.com:
“Right now, both championships seem unrealistic.”
“We’ve gone from a dominant car to one that feels undrivable in just six to eight months, which is puzzling. We really need to overhaul our setup.”
He continued, “At this stage, we’re struggling in all areas, so significant changes are crucial.”
“It’s obvious what needs to be done; now we just have to execute it. We need to act swiftly, and if we manage that, the car will become more manageable again.”
Verstappen also reflected on last year’s performance, reminiscing about having the most formidable car on the track: “We turned it into a monster, so it’s essential we revert to a more competitive setup.”
“Time doesn’t matter; we have to keep pushing without excuses.”
When probed about a team radio message where he said, “Can people in the background please be awake, it’s important,” he clarified, as quoted by Sportskeeda:
“During the race, my battery was low while I was racing Lando. I needed to switch settings, and they should have informed me when I could return to a faster setting.”
“I shouldn’t have to ask. Even though we are struggling, staying on top of things is essential—otherwise, I might as well stay at home.”
Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, finished in eighth place, marking a tough day for Red Bull. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari took home the victory, followed by Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris of McLaren, with Norris also securing the fastest lap.
To make matters worse for Red Bull, the Constructors’ Championship gap is tightening, with McLaren now trailing by just eight points.
