Valtteri Bottas has stepped into the spotlight to address ongoing rumors about his future in Formula 1, hinting strongly that he plans to stay with Sauber for the 2025 season to revitalize his racing journey. Speaking at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, according to Crash.net, Bottas expressed a solid belief in his future with the team, stating he feels “99%” certain about continuing, effectively putting to rest any speculation regarding a possible exit from F1.
When directly asked about alternatives outside the sport, he candidly replied, “Not anymore.”
Retaining Bottas is crucial for Sauber, as the team has only one vacant seat available for the upcoming season, with Nico Hulkenberg already secured in the other seat from Haas. Bottas is currently up against teammate Zhou Guanyu for that spot, particularly as Sauber weighs Bottas’ extensive experience against the fresh potential of rookies like Formula 2’s Gabriel Bortoleto.
“Still talking. Progressing. I remain positive. I shouldn’t say much more, but that’s where we are,” Bottas shared, radiating optimism.
Discussions surrounding his future appear to be moving in a favorable direction, although Bottas recognized there are “many things to discuss” before reaching a consensus.
The Finnish driver emphasized that his experience is a key asset for Sauber, especially given the team’s current struggles at the tail end of the constructors’ standings.
“My strength is the experience I bring to the table,” Bottas confidently stated.
Despite the unfortunate performance levels affecting both him and Zhou in the drivers’ standings, Bottas remains hopeful that improvements in the car next season could lead to better outcomes on track.
“This sport is often unfair,” Bottas reflected, admitting, “I’ve witnessed that on numerous occasions. My situation is challenging due to our car’s performance.”
In addition to these developments, the recent hiring of Mattia Binotto, the former Ferrari team principal, has introduced new dynamics to Sauber as it gears up for its shift to Audi by 2026. Bottas spoke favorably of his interactions with Binotto, appreciating the regular updates and clear direction established for the team’s future.
“He understands there’s a significant challenge ahead; it won’t be a straightforward path. We’ve developed a solid relationship, built on mutual respect,” Bottas remarked. “We need actions, we require change. The last two years have seen a decline, so something must give.”
Bottas expressed a clear desire to remain with Sauber. “I hope to be here next year, with a better car that allows me to showcase more of my abilities,” he said.
As Sauber embarks on its transition towards Audi, Bottas’ wealth of experience could be instrumental, especially alongside the seasoned insights that Hulkenberg brings.
“I know what I want, and I hope we can achieve that soon,” Bottas concluded.
