Saying goodbye to the days of endless profile picture deliberation.
Tinder recently unveiled a new tool named “Photo Selector” on July 17, leveraging AI technology to assist users in picking their dating profile photos. By analyzing selfies for facial recognition and accessing the user’s camera roll, the feature offers a curated selection of images for users to choose from for their profiles.
According to a study commissioned by Tinder, individuals aged 18-24 spend an average of 33 minutes searching for the ideal profile picture. The Photo Selector aims to streamline this process, allowing users to focus more on making connections.
Tinder’s CEO, Faye Iosotaluno, expressed pride in being the first dating app to introduce AI technology for enhancing the profile-building experience. In a press release, she stated, “We’re developing AI tech to assist you in making decisions, not to make them for you.”
Notably, the demand for such AI features is high, with 68 percent of Tinder users expressing interest in a photo selection tool like this. Additionally, 85 percent of singles emphasize the importance of their dating profiles aligning with their true selves.
For successful matches, the study unveiled that men displaying multiple facial photos on their profiles increase their chances of matching with women by 71 percent.
AI for Safety Measures
Tinder’s foray into AI isn’t new, with previous initiatives such as the 2021 “Are You Sure?” feature, which utilized AI to identify offensive language and prevent harmful messaging. These actions form part of Tinder’s efforts to enhance safety and prevent harassment on the platform.
In addressing safety concerns, CEO Iosotaluno affirmed Tinder’s commitment to using innovative technologies to foster authentic connections in a secure environment.
These measures come amidst growing discontent with dating apps due to safety issues, user burnout, and legal challenges facing industry giants.
Regarding the broader challenges in online dating, a survey from Pew Research Center in 2023 revealed troubling statistics, showing concerns like insecurity about received messages, unsolicited explicit content sent to women, and encounters with scammers.
Tinder’s Photo Selector feature will debut in the U.S. in July, followed by an international rollout later this summer.
