Meet Buddy, a one-year-old dog whose journey to survival has been nothing short of a miracle. After being callously abandoned and on the brink of euthanasia, he’s now fighting against serious health challenges. Buddy’s story shines a light on the darker side of pet abandonment, with aid from Cuddly, a fundraising platform that supports over 4,000 shelters globally, including Hoardin’ Huskies Rescue in South Carolina.
It’s shocking to think that around 390,000 dogs face euthanasia each year, a statistic that Buddy narrowly escaped. Originally found wandering the streets of Texas, he was picked up but soon found himself at a local kill shelter—a grim fate, but one that was almost his reality.
Upon admission to the shelter, it was discovered that Buddy had a microchip, indicating he once had an owner who wanted nothing to do with him. “Buddy’s original owner was perfectly content leaving him to die in the shelter,” shared a spokesperson from Cuddly.
Just hours away from euthanasia, Buddy was rescued by a small group and a couple who stepped up to foster him. Unfortunately, his health declined rapidly after arriving at their home. In desperate need of medical assistance, they spent $9,000 on his care but knew they had to call in Hoardin’ Huskies Rescue for further help.
“He arrived with an almost empty oxygen tank after a long drive,” the spokesperson recounted. Once at the rescue, it was clear that Buddy needed serious intervention.
“He suffered significant damage to his heart and lungs, leaving him gasping for air and reliant on life-support,” they explained. Buddy was rushed into the ER, facing a long recovery ahead. Over $5,000 has already been allocated for his essential care, and more support is urgently needed.
Yet, there’s hope on the horizon. The team is noticing early signs of recovery, even as they work to uncover the cause of his heart and lung issues. “His medical team is cautiously optimistic that Buddy will recover,” they noted, encouraged by the improvements in his condition.
Buddy’s battle is far from over, but with community support, he stands a chance at a brighter future—one where he can experience love and companionship he was cruelly denied.
