A shelter dog named Journey, who faced unimaginable cruelty being used as a bait dog for fighting, is now searching for a forever home.
Alicia Bopp, founder of Champs Chance, a North Florida dog rescue, recently took Journey into their care. In a TikTok video shared by the shelter, viewers can see the young black dog anxiously moving around while his heartbreaking story unfolds onscreen.
The caption reveals, “Our sweet Journey boy was betrayed by those who were supposed to protect him. He was used as a punching bag to train dogs for fight.” It’s a grim reminder of the ongoing issue of illegal dog fighting lurking in some areas of Florida.
Recently, over 100 neglected dogs were rescued from an underground fighting ring in the state, illustrating the troubling reality many dogs face.
When Journey was found, he was emaciated and plagued with fleas, ticks, and various injuries. Bopp shared, “They were determined to find someone to save him and contacted us.” Journey’s story has struck a chord online, with comments like, “That poor angel. I’m so glad he’s loved now,” and “He deserves all the love and happiness in the world.”
Champs Chance operates solely on donations and currently cares for over 150 dogs. Bopp explained, “We try to help rural areas that lack animal control and save pups at risk of euthanasia.” Unfortunately, tragic cases like Journey’s are not uncommon in the region, and Bopp noted the shelter system is nearing its breaking point.
“The south struggles with animal welfare, and just when we think we’ve seen it all, something worse happens.” Despite his tough past, Journey, with his loving nature, is ready for a new beginning. “Journey is a great pup and would fit in really anywhere,” Bopp said optimistically.
