Looks like the New York Jets are starting off on a bumpy road even before the official training camp kicks in. Two key players, Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback, and Haason Reddick, a newly acquired edge-rusher, opted out of mandatory minicamp, facing fines for their absence.
According to NFL writer Kevin Patra, Robert Saleh, the Jets coach, shared insights about Rodgers missing camp, mentioning that Rodgers had informed him beforehand about his absence due to a significant personal event.
The fines for missing the minicamp are substantial — each player stands to lose $50,861 if they skip all two days. These fines are imposed under the NFL’s collective agreement, with daily penalties set at $16,953 for the first day and $33,908 for the second day.
While Rodgers might make a brief appearance at minicamp, Reddick’s absence is raising concerns. The Jets traded for him from the Eagles this offseason, but it seems Reddick is holding out for a new contract, potentially leading to a prolonged standoff.
The Jets’ salary cap situation is tight, with just over six million dollars available. This scarcity could complicate negotiations with Reddick, who is eyeing a better deal. Reddick’s current contract has one year left, with a salary of $14.25 million, presenting a delicate situation for both parties to resolve.
The Jets defense has shown promise, with players like Reddick and standout cornerback Sauce Gardner. Finding a middle ground to keep Reddick in play by 2024 could be crucial for the Jets’ playoff aspirations, building on their strong defensive unit from 2023.
