Wilson handled the situation gracefully, expressing excitement to work with Fields, who made it clear he’s gunning for the starting position. The Steelers’ coach seems content to let the competition between the two quarterbacks play out.
In a surprising move, back in March, head coach Mike Tomlin announced Wilson would start as QB1, but also mentioned the position was up for grabs, with Fields in the running.
Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator, suggested that Wilson is currently leading the race, although Fields is still in contention. With the preseason and training camp ahead, the Steelers have time to make the final decision.
Despite Wilson’s extensive 12-year experience, it doesn’t guarantee him the starting spot, considering his challenges with the Broncos. The coaching staff wants to give the QB competition ample time to unfold.
Fields, with only three seasons under his belt, stands to gain valuable knowledge from Wilson. The Steelers’ GM, Omar Khan, deserves praise for securing two strong QBs for the team.
