The debate over the greatest wrestler of all time will probably never end. Fans have made strong cases for numerous legends like Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and John Cena.
However, WWE icon Bret Hart has shared his thoughts on who he believes deserves a spot among the best, and interestingly, it’s a current WWE superstar.
While speaking on “Casual Conversations with The Classic” hosted by Justin, Hart revealed his ideal opponent would be Rey Mysterio. “Rey Mysterio is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time,” he remarked. “He’s right up there as the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. Nobody can do what Rey Mysterio does.”
Despite his remarkable skills, Mysterio often flies under the radar in discussions about the all-time greats. He began training in Mexico before making waves in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and later, World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as a key player in the Cruiserweight Division alongside talents like Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko.
In WCW, Mysterio racked up an impressive five Cruiserweight Championships and four tag team titles. After WCW was acquired by WWE in 2001, he took a brief detour through the independent circuit before joining WWE in 2002.
Mysterio’s time in WWE is closely linked to Eddie Guerrero, marked by both their tag team triumphs and intense rivalries, most notably their 2005 custody storyline over Dominik Mysterio, settled in a memorable ladder match.
Following Guerrero’s untimely passing, Mysterio rose to prominence in WWE; he won the 2006 Royal Rumble and secured the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22.
His initial run with WWE was filled with accolades before his contract ended in 2015. Following a stint in promotions like Lucha Underground and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Mysterio made a surprise return to WWE in the 2018 Royal Rumble and has since focused on his relationship with Dominik, who has now grown up.
Throughout his WWE career, Mysterio has captured the World Heavyweight Championship twice, was a WWE Champion once, and holds multiple titles across other divisions. His legacy was solidified in 2023 when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame alongside icons like The Great Muta and Stacy Keibler.
