Caitlin Clark from the Indiana Fever has taken the WNBA by storm. She’s not just breaking records; she’s changing the game and attracting more fans to women’s basketball than ever before.
This past season, Clark amazed fans and analysts alike, averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game, leading the Fever to their first 20-win season in nearly a decade.
Now, the former Iowa Hawkeye has been officially named the WNBA Rookie of the Year for the 2024 season, solidifying her impact in her debut year.
The WNBA celebrated her achievement, stating on X, “Caitlin Clark redefined what it means to be a rookie, conquering WNBA milestones and setting new standards in just Year 1.”
This rookie season was filled with record-breaking performances. Clark set notable benchmarks, including the most points (769) and assists (337) in a single season by a rookie, as well as the highest number of three-pointers (122) and triple-doubles (2).
She also made her mark with the Fever by recording the most points in a single game (35) by a rookie, further emphasizing her scoring ability.
“I am incredibly honored to be named Rookie of the Year,” Clark said in a Fever press release. “I’m grateful to my family, friends, teammates, and everyone that supported us this season. I’m proud of our accomplishments and excited for the future.”
The Fever commemorated her achievement with a fun video, showcasing her impressive season in action-figure style.
Interestingly, Clark didn’t receive a unanimous vote for the award, missing out by just one vote to Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky, a familiar rival from her college days.
Reese had a stellar season, averaging 13.6 points and a record 13.1 rebounds, along with a rookie record of 446 rebounds. Unfortunately, her season was cut short due to an arm injury. She still managed to set a WNBA record with 15 consecutive double-doubles.
While both players have made huge impacts in the league, Clark’s numbers firmly secure her position as Rookie of the Year. The future looks bright for both of these phenomenal athletes.
