Former WWE Champion Was This Close to Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

WWE superstars have a knack for transitioning into Hollywood stardom. Notable names like Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), John Cena, and Dave Bautista (Batista) have successfully made the leap, while legends like Hulk Hogan and Rowdy Roddy Piper have left their mark in classic films.

However, many talent remain on the sidelines when it comes to film roles, one of whom is former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest.

Recently, during an interview with Chris Van Vliet, it came to light that Priest was once in the running for the role of Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). Priest shared, “It’s a long story, but basically… it got taken away from me,” while clarifying that it wasn’t Marvel that canceled it, but rather changes within WWE’s management at the time.

Despite this setback, Priest remains hopeful for future Marvel opportunities and has no regrets. “Now, I’m busier than ever,” he noted. “If I hadn’t I might not be sitting here as the world champ.” He kicked off his wrestling journey in Ring of Honor as Punishment Martinez, where he held the ROH World Television Championship.

After competing in ROH and New Japan Pro Wrestling, he made waves in WWE’s NXT, winning the NXT North American Championship by defeating stars like Johnny Gargano and Velveteen Dream in a thrilling ladder match.

Priest made his main roster debut after an impressive showing at the 2021 Royal Rumble and quickly found himself in notable rivalries, ultimately capturing the WWE United States Championship.

His most impactful period came as part of The Judgment Day, a faction that started with Edge and Rhea Ripley and evolved into one of WWE’s top groups. As a member, Priest amassed four Tag Team Championships, won the Men’s Money in the Bank match, and secured the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40.

Currently, Priest continues to thrive as one of the most popular wrestlers on the roster, especially after teaming up with Rhea Ripley as the Terror Twins. If his momentum keeps up, a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe might just be in his future.
